About TBP

CLINICAL IMAGING
Skin cancer screening, diagnosis, surveillance and management have evolved exponentially over the past 10 years. Imaging is now an integral part of skin cancer care. Skin Cancer Doctors use it in conjunction with the traditional written notes-based medical record system to form a patient’s complete clinical record.

At Braddon Skin Cancer Clinic Doctors use DermEngine/Molescope provided by MetaOptima as the clinical imaging and record software system. As a tool in skin cancer screening, surveillance, management and care, it is essential for the doctors and trained photographers at Braddon Skin Cancer Clinic to take the following photography and imaging.
Overview photography
Clinical images of spots or rashes where you may be identifiable within the image depending on the body part photographed.

Dermoscopy photography
Dermoscopic (skin micrography) imaging of your skin lesions as part of skin cancer screening and monitoring.

Total Body Photography - TBP - AI
This consists of images of the entire skin (usually with underwear on) to provide a comprehensive record of your skin.
It costs $175, takes around 10 minutes, and may be done before or after your full skin check.
While it is recommended for most patients to have this done it is not compulsory and you can choose not to have 3D TBP.
The Clinic uses Optimascan which is a 3D skin imaging system developed by MetaOptima. It takes around 100 images of the skin surface and constructs a single 3D image of as much of the skin as is able to be imaged in a single position. Extra photos are taken to capture areas which are not exposed in the scanning position. A single 3D scan is helpful for the doctors as a baseline of the spots you have at the time of imaging. Once you have the 3D scan, this will be used at future skin checks to help your doctor more quickly recognise if a spot of interest is new or changing. For some patients who are higher risk for melanoma, subsequent scans may be recommended, at which point the AI (Artificial Intelligence) tool can be used to suggest new or changing lesions.
IMPORTANT: The Optimascan will NOT analyse your lesions and can not replace a comprehensive skin examination by your doctor. It is rather a tool to improve the quality of your future skin checks.
